Do You See and Engage Your Hidden Figures?  |  By Matt Larson  |  March 2017 Lyn,    By now most of us with an interest in mathematics or mathematics education have seen the powerful movie Hidden Figures—many of us likely more than once. The inspiring film focuses on the critical role of three African American women and their significant contributions to the mathematical and engineering work necessary to the initial success of the U.S. space program in the 1960s.    The movie also uncovers for many of us the significant mathematical contributions many African American women made, beginning in 1943, to aeronautical research as part of the West Computing Group at Langley, where they manually carried out complex computations for flight and space research as "human computers." For teachers:  Free Computer Science workshop for elementary and middle school teachers and administrators:  The Code.org CS Fundamentals training will take place at the Academy of Aerospace and Engineering on Saturday, March 25. For Students:  Capital Community College will be hosting the 4th annual Summer Computer Science Program for middle school students (aged 12-15).
June 19th  - June 30th

The 2017 summer program contains two tracks - Mobile Application Development and Cybersecurity.

The program cost is $275 for the two-week program. Lunch is provided to students each day. Need-based scholarships are available to Hartford and East Hartford residents.

Speak at 2018 NCTM Annual Meeting Although the 2017 NCTM Annual Meeting & Exposition is still upon us, it's never too early to think about presenting at the 2018 Annual Meeting. All proposals must be submitted to a unique topic strand—find out what strands will make up the conference program and read descriptions of each. The deadline to submit a proposal is May 1. The Math Forum Pi Day Resources Pi Day falls on the second Tuesday of this month. Celebrate the circular fun with the Math Forum's  Teacher Exchange, which offers a collection of songs, trivia quizzes, and other party preparation suggestions, as well as units on deriving the irrational through measurement and  using similarity to motivate its determination.
