    My name is Jennifer Rianhard. I work at The Sherman School in Sherman, CT. I am the math interventionist/coach for grades K-5 and I sometimes work with middle school students. I'm excited to join this math book study group to learn how to help students develop their mathematical thinking and reasoning skills. My goal this year is performance based tasks in word problems for grades K-5, (focusing on 3rd grade for the scores) so I'm helping that I can learn some new information to help myself, the students, and the teachers for math word problems.

    Hi all. I'm Grace Kelemanik, one of the co-authors of Routines for Reasoning. Amy, Susan, and I are excited that you all are engaging in a book study of R4R. I've got the schedule on my calendar and plan to drop in regularly. Looking forward to seeing how you all take the ideas in the book and run with them. As we say in the book, our greatest challenge as educators is ensuring that each and everyone of our students think and reason mathematically.

    Hi my name is Mindy Gottlieb, I am certified 4-12 and have been involved in PIMMS. Teaching was a career change for me and I love it. I am currently teaching at Flood Middle School in Stratford Ct. I am participating in this discussion because I love to learn and am always looking for ways to excite, motivate and have my students love learning. I am a Jo Boaler and Robert Kapinsky groupie, I love their problems and agree with their philosophies.

    I’m Karen Campe, your facilitator and co-learner for this book study. I have taught students, teachers, and student teachers in various roles and settings since 1988, with primary focus on math grades 7-12. I’m currently an independent consultant in New Canaan CT with a passion for using all types of technology to enhance student understanding.

    I am interested in the R4R book study to promote the teaching of mathematical reasoning. I look forward to our discussions together!

I'm excited to join this book study to gain more knowledge on how to help students reason during math.     Hi I am Sara Kaminski, from Milford CT. I am a math coach in a K-5 elementary school, as well as a part-time professor at Quinnipiac. I teach the Methods and Pedagogy of Math courses as well as Math Teacher Leadership/Coaching course. As a coach and instructor, I am always interested in learning about how to create the habits of mind of mathematicians, in both students and teachers. I feel consistent routines most definitely support this development and am looking forward to the reading and discussion opportunities! A few of my colleagues are also participating in this book study and we are excited to bring our learning back to our district!

    Hi! I'm Jessica Scandurra and I am a K-6 math coach in Stratford. Before becoming a math coach, I taught K and 1 for 11 years. Our district uses Ready Common Core as our core resource and think share compare was my first introduction to routines. This lead me to R4R. I have been dabbling in the different routines for the last two years and am excited to participate in this book study to further develop my understanding of the routines and to use them more frequently in the classrooms I support.

    My name is Leah Frazee, and I am a professor in the math department at Central Connecticut State University. I was a high school mathematics teacher for 12 years before moving to the university to work with future teachers. I teach content and methods courses for pre-service elementary and secondary teachers, supervise secondary student teachers, and teach other math courses. I am looking forward to getting to know other educators in Connecticut through this study, and learning new resources that I can use with future teachers, as well as in my own mathematics teaching.

      Leah, I also taught Math Methods at Yale for about 15 years before shifting university priorities shuttered the Teacher Preparation/Education Studies program. I still work with in-service teachers (and any pre-service teachers who attend math education conferences) but I definitely miss working with student teachers!

    After 22 years teaching Transitional, 1st, 2nd and 5th grades, I became a K-5 Math Coach/Specialist at Live Oaks Elementary School in Milford 4 years ago. I am always eager to learn and implement mathematical routines that can increase students' mathematical thinking skills. I believe this book study will provide resources and practices to engage all students. I will share my new learning with the students and teachers at my school.     My name is Nicole Gilson and I am a 5th grade teacher at Peck Place School in Orange, CT. As a student, I was a serious math "phobe" and dreaded math in any capacity except geometry. As it turns out I am a very visual learner and if I had learned math the way I teach math, I would have been much more successful and confident. When we moved to the Common Core Standards, our curriculum and instruction experienced many changes. I embraced these changes and completely revolutionized my approach to teaching math. In 2014, I was nominated for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Ironically, this self proclaimed "math phobe" represented CT in 2016 in Washington, DC. This once in a life time experience opened my eyes even more and I am currently working on my 6th Year at SCSU as a teacher specialist with a focus on STEM and mathematical instruction. I am excited to apply some of these ideas and suggestions in my classroom as I continue to strive to help every child unlock their mathematical abilities.

    Hello! My name is Luke and I am a 6th-grade math teacher in West Hartford. I am participating in this book study to learn some techniques to support my students in accessing math to their fullest potential. We are in our second year of using Curriculum Associates Ready materials. One of the daily structures in the Ready program is a routine they call Think-Share-Compare. I hope to blend this routine with the practices outlined in the book.

    An online book club for discussion around professional reading is a brilliant idea! Thank you for getting this started.

    I'm Monica Cavender. I work as a faculty member at Quinnipiac University in the MAT program. The Routines for Reasoning book is one on my shelf that I purchased with the intent to read and haven't yet. Through this book club, will force me to make the time for something I know I will enjoy.

    I also am truly looking forward to hearing from teachers & coaches. As my role is to prepare teacher candidates for classrooms of their own, the more I can interact with teachers & instructional coaches, the better. I am looking for the guidance in "keeping it real". :)

    Hello All! My name is Susan Lukianov and I am a K-6 Math Specialist at Peck Place School in Orange, CT. Before transitioning to the current role, I was a full-time classroom teacher (7 years in Greenwich, 3 years in Rye Neck, 3 years at Peck Place) spanning grades 1-3 and a Science teacher for grades 3, 4, 6). I slow worked as a Museum Educator at the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum (amazing job/experience). I am interested in participating in this book study for several reasons. I know that I need to be well versed in the SMPs and feel that I often only scratch the surface of these most important practices. I could easily just read the book on my own but I know that opportunities for reflection and discussions with fellow educators will enrich this experience.

    Hello,

    I am K-5 Math Coach in Massachusetts. Last year I worked with Amy and Grace implementing two routines in a fifth grade classroom. The routines developed students' problem solving skills. Students became more adept at communicating their thinking and reasoning. I saw growth with perseverance and I look forward to hearing ideas about the different routines, tasks used, and the transfer of learning from the routines into daily lessons.

    I am David Shimchick. I am in my 22nd year of teaching, the past 10 of which have been as a math coach in Milford. There are 8 of us in Milford and each works in a K-5 building. I am participating because one team member thought this would make a great PGO. I am also here because my team drags me along with them to provide the token male viewpoint and comic relief.

    I have been teaching high school math for the past 16 years. I typically teach Algebra 2 courses and Statistics courses (AP and college prep). Our district has had several PD opportunities with Routines for Reasoning. I joined the book study to share experiences with other math teachers from other districts, and especially to hear about high school level experience with the routines.

    My name is Laura Larson. I teach 7th grade math at the Holten Richmond Middle School in Danvers, Massachusetts. Our administration has arranged for us to receive training on the Routines for Reasoning from Grace and Amy, and we've had several separate sessions over the past couple of school years. I have already seen the value in the routines that I have used so far with my students, both this year and last year, and I am looking forward to discussing the book and the routines with others who are looking to implement them in their classes.

We work with k-12 students and much of our focus is on college readiness. I am finding this book study to be very helpful as I am primarily a math/science tutor.

    Hello :)

    I teach at Danvers High School in Danvers, MA and am currently teaching Geometry and AP Calculus (AB and BC), but I have also taught Alg 1, Alg 2, and Pre-Calc.

    I'm interested in learning about more routines and getting ideas on how to incorporate the routines more easily into my existing practice. We have worked with Grace and Amy on a few of the routines, so this exploration will hopefully help solidify those routines and teach us about more of them.

    Hello. My name is Melissa Manning and I am a math specialist in a K-4 elementary school in Shelton, CT. My position provides both intervention of students with math difficulties and coaching. Sorry I am late to the party (book study) but I am currently working toward my sixth year in administration. As a result, I had to delay my reading. Through this book study, I am excited to explore the "routines" for reasoning as we encourage our students' development in their mathematical thinking.
