Wrap-Up Week - Option 3 (Action)

Make a goal for yourself and share it briefly here.  It might be a plan for changing your teaching practice in a small or large way, a personal commitment to finishing the book, or any other objective you’d like to accomplish based on your participation in this book study.

    I already mentioned this in a previous post, but I think my plan for next year is going to be to implement decide and defend with some frequency. We have a rotating schedule (where we see kids at different parts of the day throughout each 7 day cycle) and I'd like to aim for day 4 being a decide and defend day (not necessarily every week as perhaps I'll find sometimes the concepts don't lend themselves to it or I don't figure out a good problem for that concept). So I'd have 3 days to introduce and play with new content, then a day to (hopefully) deeply engage with that content, then two more days to finish off the cycle (usually I quiz on the last day). I don't know what I'll be teaching next year, but once I find out, I can start constructing what those exemplars will look like.

    My goal is to incorporate the Routines more on a consistent basis and keep them integrated throughout the year. Contemplate then Calculate always starts off our year but we haven't done another C then C since then. We have incorporated using the Three Reads routine. We did one Decide and Defend but haven't done another one yet. Just did a Connecting Reps for the first time because it fit nicely to matching stories to graphs. But now that we have done a Connecting Reps it would be nice to plan another one sometime soon so we can do that routine a few times. Similar to Todd's post maybe we can always do a routine on an early release, shorter block or once every 7 day cycle.(something like that) We also want to try using Capturing Quantities with our 6th graders. My goal would be to plan out next year better so that these routines are spaced out but go in a logical way throughout the year.

    I will be out on maternity leave for the rest of the school year so my goal is around plans for the following school year. My goal for next year is to implement these routines on a frequent basis. We have an extra 20 minute block 4x a week with students where I usually go over homework or implement math activities from our Investigations curriculum. I think that I could implement one routine a week during this 20 block. At first, I may need to introduce the routine during the regular block to ensure we have enough time but eventually could move towards implementing it weekly or biweekly during the 20 block time.

    My short-term goal for next year is to continue to regularly use the routines I'm already familiar with, and to implement "Capturing Quantities" more. I really like the habits it generates in students.

    A secondary goal is to keep the routines going throughout the entire school year. We fell out of the habit during the final trimester, and I want to keep the momentum going next year!
