Chapter 12 – Option 2 (Connection)

This 2020-21 school year has been unusual and challenging in so many ways. What strategies have you used to get your students working together and alone? What has worked? What has been a hurdle you haven’t been able to overcome?

For us (K-2), we have had a really hard time with kids playing math games together and the need for it. We have digital games for them to play, but it is just not the same. Some classrooms, have made it work by using breakout rooms, but it still doesn't replace the playing together.

We were able to adapt many of the games so kids could still play together, but have their own materials. It allows the kids to still get the math and conversation out of the game, but does take a little bit of the collaborating out of the equation.

Unfortunately, this year has made everything very difficult. However, there are some things that have come out of this that have helped. I am now seeing the teachers rely on the discussions a bit more in the classrooms, because they are worried about their "at home" kids not having someone to talk to. Hopefully this practice continues into the future.
